I specialize in families and children, but provide counseling for a range of problems including mood, personality, and eating disorders, and coping with trauma or loss. Children
I believe that all children can flourish with love, understanding, and the proper coping tools needed to deal with the emotional and mental struggles that can come with childhood. I can counsel children from ages 2 - 18. All children's counseling involves the family on some level while maintaining respect for the child's privacy. In many cases I may ask to network with the child's school or daycare in order to provide stability for the child across the board. With younger children, I primarily employ play and art therapy. With older children and teens, I focus on developing healthy coping methods using CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectal behavioral therapy), and art therapy.
Families and Couples
There are many life events that could trigger family dysfunction - moving, a new baby, adolescence, illness, death or other trauma. I consider each family's unique composition and history in order to help you communicate better and come to harmony within the family unit. I often go for a solution focused approach in family matters, while working on deeper understanding and more efficient communication skills.
Relationship problems in couples often stem from miscommunication, unmet expectations, or misaligned goals. Improving communication and mutual understanding is often the key to these issues, and I tend to use solution focused therapy and DBT to give couples the tools to move forward positively in their relationship.
Individuals
My goal is to help people improve their mental health, work through difficult transitions and adjustments in life, and reach their full potential. I believe that every person has the strength and ability to find their own stability and happiness, sometimes they just need a little help finding it. I adjust therapy methods to suit the individual, which is generally discussed at the end of the first intake session.
Some of the more common issues I deal with are:
- domestic violence
- mood and personality disorders
- acculturation problems
- eating disorders
- new parent stress and coping
- job related stress
